This may perhaps be one of the biggest reasons that religion still exists in today's society. It's very easy to believe in God. You can simply use God as an excuse for pretty much anything. Natural disasters, love, a mountain range. Anything. It's somewhat more challenging to not believe in a God, especially when so many people in our world are believers. Even though one may be an atheist, that person still might find comfort in the thought of a higher power. Who wouldn't? Someone always caring, loving, and watching out for us is a very appealing thing. The person who wrote this seems like they just pretend to not believe in God, while secretly they do believe. Perhaps they are surrounded by atheists, whether be them friends, family, or co-workers. It's interesting how those who are around us can really shape us into who we are, at least on the outside.
Well, a contrasting view is that the artifact was made by a theist, who accepts a commonplace something along the lines of "everyone believes in god, whether or not they admit it in public." This would be the argumentative form of the logical fallacy of "appeal to the people", wherein the theist would be attempting to portray theism as a justified view because everyone holds it, secretly or not. Personally, given the complete rhetorical capitulation of the putative atheist, I suspect that this was written by a theist.
ReplyDeleteI think a large percentage of people secretly feel like the postcard states. Religion and Science have such different views yet each supply compelling theories. Given the harsh and most times forceful way religion is delivered (and it's believe or perish ideology), supplies a confusing and difficult absolute decision... it is easy to profess one idea or the other, but to wholeheartedly leap in either direction is quite a gamble... do you restrict your instinct and way of being, or do you risk eternal damnation based on some tattered writings authored in large by madmen?
